How to Use Plugoo Instant Messaging with Online Volunteers

November 2007 - Although voice e-mail, video mail and video conferencing can provide enhanced forms of communication, a non-profit organization should also provide a Web-based instant messaging tool to allow easy communication with any of their online volunteers or potential online volunteers. One such free (text-based) instant messaging service (Meebo is a similar service) that a non-profit organization can place on their Web site is called Plugoo.

Download (Right Click, Save) the PDF from The Internet Archive created by MYS online volunteer Kimberly Mickelson that explains how to easily use Plugoo. For further information, www.mys.ca/volunter or RandyTyler@gmail.com

Internet Revolutionizes The Way Of Volunteering - PNNOnline

Topic Special Features

One nonprofit in Canada realized that it was becoming increasingly difficult to recruit volunteers to help with their program. They acted on the adage that "when one door closes, another opens." Read this feature article to discover how Macdonald Youth Services is finding the volunteers that they need.

By Randy Tyler

When it became ever more difficult to recruit face-to-face volunteers, our youth treatment agency, Macdonald Youth Services (MYS), turned to the global Internet for help. Whether looking for a graphic designer, video editor, software developer, database creator, writer, web designer or voice narrator, for example, our organization has been at the leading-edge and forefront recruiting volunteers from around the globe. This new kind of faceless, highly-skilled volunteers, whether from such far flung locales as Bangladesh, Toronto, Texas, Sri Lanka, Montreal, New York or Hong Kong, have various reasons for getting involved, but their willingness to help us, an organization they will never see, or even know where it is located on the map, is unprecedented and amazing.

With the global explosion of online users, the Internet is revolutionizing and forever changing the face of volunteering. Never before have volunteers had the opportunity to donate their time and talents to an organization a province, state, country or continent away from the comfort and convenience of their home. See PNNOnline for the complete article.

Online Volunteering Definition Conceived by Randy Tyler - Narrated by Geoff Edwards

Virtual Volunteering, at one level, is defined as volunteering via the Internet. MYS's definition of online volunteering, conceived by Randy Tyler in 2003, reflects a deeper phenomena. Geoff Edwards, an MYS Vancouver-based online volunteer voice artist, brought life to Randy's definition in his voice narration. For further information, www.mys.ca/volunter or RandyTyler@gmail.com.
